What's the history of the building?
This building has been a restaurant and bar since 1897, when James M. Hickey opened The Shoe and Leather Exchange in Haverhill’s thriving downtown shoe factory district. It remained a bar until Prohibition was enacted in 1920, and after Prohibition was repealed in 1933, it reopened as The Tap. It has remained a staple of downtown Haverhill for nearly 100 years. In 2003, The Tap was transformed into The Tap Brewing Company, the brewpub you know today, where we brew every batch of beer on-site in our 10-barrel brewhouse.
